DO'S
· Occasionally wash your pearls in mild soapy water
to remove perfume, hair spray and other cosmetics as well as body oil and sweat. Pat dry with a clean soft cloth and lay out to dry before storing.
· When storing pearls, wrap them in tissue paper or a dust free soft cloth and store them separate from other jewellery items so they do not scratch each other.
· Check with your jeweller to determine when your pearls need to be restrung. For instance, if you wore them a lot you might have them checked once per year. It is natural for the string to wear out.
· Do wear your pearls often. The softness of the skin and its humidity are very good for pearls and help them retain their luster. Excessive sweat, however, can harm them due to the salts and oils excreted by the human body.
DON’TS
· Do not clean cultured pearls with chemicals or abrasives.
· Never allow pearls to come in contact with chemicals such as hair spray or perfume, chlorine, creams and such. Let your pearls be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
· DONT try to clean your pearls if they are too dirty, take them to a jeweller.
· Never allow your pearls to be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner. Use a designated pearl cleaner or ask your jeweller for advice.
· Safes and bank vaults will dry out your pearls if they are stored for a long period of time making them dull and chalky in appearance.
· Pearls that are cemented such as earrings, pendants and or rings, should not exposed to water or moisture as it will loosen the cement.
